Exigences Légales Canadiennes / Canadian Legal Requirements

In Canada, load securement is governed by the National Safety Code Standard 10 and provincial regulations. Key requirements:

  • All cargo must be secured before vehicle movement
  • Minimum working load limit (WLL) for tie-downs must equal 50% of cargo weight
  • At minimum: one tie-down for loads under 1.1m (3.6 ft), two for loads up to 3m (9.8 ft)
  • Straps must be inspected for damage before each use
  • Damaged straps must be removed from service immediately

  1. Inspect the strap — check for cuts, fraying, or damaged hooks before use
  2. Hook securely — J-hooks must be fully seated in anchor points or D-rings
  3. Route correctly — straps should go over and through the load, not just around it
  4. Ratchet tight — eliminate all slack; the strap should have zero movement
  5. Check after 50 km — loads settle; re-tighten after the first 50 km of travel

Replace your straps when you see: cuts, fraying, bleaching from UV exposure, deformed or cracked hooks, or a damaged ratchet mechanism. There is no shame in replacing straps — a blown strap at highway speed is catastrophic.
